How to Measure Local SEO Results (Beyond Rankings)
Ranking reports feel like progress but mislead constantly — local results vary by the searcher's exact location, device, and history. To know whether local SEO is working, measure outcomes instead.
The Four Profile Metrics That Matter Most
Calls from your profile, direction requests, website clicks, and message volume. These represent real people taking real action. For most local businesses, these correlate with revenue better than any traffic metric.
Search Console Impressions by Query Group
Group your target queries into clusters — service terms, town terms, cost terms — and track impressions and average position per cluster monthly. Cluster-level movement is far more meaningful than any individual keyword's position.
Indexed Page Count
Track how many of your pages are actually indexed. If you publish ten service-area pages and only three get indexed, you have a content quality problem, not a ranking problem.
Conversions, Segmented by Source
Set up conversion tracking for form submissions, phone clicks, and booking events, then segment by organic search and Google Business Profile separately. Blended numbers hide which channel is actually producing.
Review Count and Velocity
Log total reviews and new reviews per month. This is both a leading indicator of ranking movement and a direct input into conversion rate.
Ask Every Caller How They Found You
Imperfect data, still valuable. Attribution tools miss word of mouth, referrals, and the customer who saw you three times before calling. One question at intake fills gaps no analytics platform can.
Report Monthly, Judge Quarterly
Local search fluctuates week to week. Look at your numbers monthly to catch problems, but judge whether the strategy is working on a rolling 90-day basis.
