The 20-Point SEO Audit Any Small Business Can Run in an Afternoon
You do not need a $10,000 audit to find the problems holding your site back. Most small business sites fail on the same twenty items. Work through these in order.
Technical Foundation (1-6)
Is your site indexed — search site:yourdomain.com and count the pages? Is there a valid sitemap.xml submitted to Search Console? Does robots.txt accidentally block anything important? Does the site load over HTTPS with no mixed-content warnings? Does every URL resolve to one canonical version? Do you have any 404s linked from your own pages?
Speed and Mobile (7-10)
Does the homepage load in under three seconds on a phone on cellular data? Are images compressed and sized correctly? Is text readable without zooming? Are tap targets large enough that a thumb hits them reliably?
On-Page Basics (11-15)
Does every page have a unique title tag under 60 characters containing its target keyword? A unique meta description under 160 characters? Exactly one H1? Descriptive alt text on meaningful images? Internal links pointing to it from other relevant pages?
Local Signals (16-18)
Is your Google Business Profile fully complete, with all categories, services, hours, and at least 20 recent photos? Does your NAP match exactly across your site, profile, and the major directories? Is LocalBusiness schema present and valid?
Content and Conversion (19-20)
Does each core service have its own dedicated page rather than sharing one? Is there a clear, visible call to action above the fold on every important page?
How to Prioritize What You Find
Fix indexing and crawl blockers first — nothing else matters if pages cannot be found. Then speed and mobile. Then local signals, which produce the fastest wins for most small businesses. Content expansion comes last.
Re-Audit Quarterly
Sites decay. Plugins change, pages get republished, redirects break. A quarterly pass through this list catches problems while they are still cheap to fix.
