LocalBusiness Schema Markup: A Plain-English Setup Guide
Schema markup is structured data added to your pages that describes your business in a format machines read reliably. It does not directly boost rankings, but it strongly influences how you are understood, displayed, and cited.
Start With LocalBusiness
Use the most specific type available — Restaurant, Dentist, HomeAndConstructionBusiness, ProfessionalService — rather than the generic LocalBusiness type. Include name, address, phone, URL, opening hours, price range, and geo coordinates.
Add Service Markup for Each Offering
Each service page should describe the service, the provider, and the area served. This is how search engines connect 'water heater replacement' to your business and to Augusta County specifically.
FAQPage Markup Where It Fits
If a page genuinely contains questions and answers, FAQ markup makes them eligible for expanded display and makes the content easier for AI systems to extract. Do not add it to pages without real Q&A content.
BreadcrumbList for Site Structure
Breadcrumb markup helps search engines understand your hierarchy and often improves how your URL displays in results. It is trivial to add and rarely implemented on small business sites.
Review and AggregateRating Rules
You may mark up reviews collected on your own site, but not reviews scraped from third-party platforms. Misusing this markup risks a manual penalty, so implement it carefully or not at all.
Keep It Truthful and Synchronized
Your schema must match what is visible on the page and what appears in your Google Business Profile. Conflicting hours or addresses between schema and profile create exactly the uncertainty you are trying to eliminate.
Validate Everything
Run every template through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator after any site change. Broken markup fails silently and can sit unnoticed for months.
