Local Link Building: 12 Links Any Small Business Can Earn
Links remain one of the strongest ranking factors, and local businesses have an advantage most national sites lack: they exist in a physical community full of organizations that publish websites. Here are twelve links you can realistically earn.
1-3: The Institutional Basics
Your chamber of commerce member directory, your local economic development or downtown association listing, and any trade association you belong to. These are trusted, locally relevant, and usually included in dues you already pay.
4-5: Sponsorships
Youth sports teams, school programs, festivals, and nonprofit events almost always publish a sponsor page with links. A $250 sponsorship often produces a better link than a $2,000 outreach campaign, plus actual community goodwill.
6-7: Supplier and Partner Pages
Manufacturers, franchisors, and software vendors frequently maintain 'where to buy' or 'certified partner' directories. Ask your reps directly — most businesses never do.
8-9: Local Press and Community Blogs
Give reporters a real story: a hire, an expansion, a community initiative, or original local data. Local outlets need content and will link to the business at the center of it.
10: Complementary Business Cross-Links
A wedding photographer, florist, and venue can each maintain a genuine recommended-vendors page. These links are relevant, natural, and drive actual referral traffic.
11: Alumni, Church, and Civic Organization Directories
Rotary, Kiwanis, alumni networks, and faith community business directories are legitimate local citations that most competitors overlook.
12: Be the Source of Local Data
Publish something no one else has: annual pricing data for your industry in your region, a seasonal guide, or a survey of local customers. Linkable assets earn links passively for years.
What to Avoid
Paid link networks, mass directory submissions, and reciprocal link schemes. They are cheap because they do not work, and cleaning them up later is expensive.
