How to Rank in the Google Map Pack (Local 3-Pack)
When someone searches for a local service, the three map results at the top of the page take the overwhelming majority of clicks. Everything below them competes for scraps. Getting into that three-result pack is the highest-value objective in local SEO.
The Three Ranking Factors That Matter
Google weighs relevance (does your profile match the query), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You cannot change distance. You can heavily influence the other two.
Relevance: Your Profile Is a Landing Page
Choose the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories for every real service line. Fill out the services section completely with descriptions. Write a business description that names what you do and where you do it. Empty fields are lost relevance.
Prominence: Reviews Do the Heavy Lifting
Total review count, average rating, and review recency all feed prominence. So does review content — reviews that mention a service by name help you rank for that service. Ask customers to describe what you did for them rather than leaving a bare star rating.
Photos and Posts Signal Activity
Profiles with regular photo uploads and weekly posts outperform dormant ones. This is partly a ranking signal and heavily a conversion signal: a profile with 60 recent photos gets chosen over one with four stock images.
Consistency Across the Web
Your name, address, and phone number must match exactly everywhere they appear — your website, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, industry directories, and chamber listings. Inconsistency creates uncertainty, and uncertainty suppresses rankings.
Your Website Still Matters
The map pack pulls signals from the website you link to. A fast, well-structured site with a location page, embedded map, and LocalBusiness schema strengthens the profile it is attached to.
Common Mistakes That Suppress Rankings
Keyword stuffing your business name, using a virtual office address, creating duplicate profiles, hiding your address when you genuinely serve customers at a location, and ignoring negative reviews. Each of these can cost you the pack.
A Realistic Timeline
Profile optimization can move rankings within two to four weeks. Review velocity and citation cleanup compound over three to six months. This is one of the few areas of SEO where early results are common.
