7 Social Media Advertising Mistakes That Waste Your Budget

    May 2024· 5 min read·By Abbey Smith

Social media advertising should be one of your most profitable marketing channels. When done right, it delivers highly targeted leads at scale. When done wrong, it's an expensive way to get likes from people who will never buy from you.

Mistake 1: Boosting Posts Instead of Running Campaigns

The 'Boost Post' button is Facebook's way of getting you to spend money with minimal targeting and optimization. Always create campaigns in Ads Manager where you have full control over targeting, placement, bidding, and optimization objectives.

    Mistake 2: Wrong Campaign Objective

Choosing 'Traffic' when you want leads, or 'Engagement' when you want sales, tells the algorithm to optimize for the wrong outcome. If you want leads, choose the Lead Generation or Conversion objective. The algorithm will find people most likely to take that specific action.

    Mistake 3: Too Narrow Targeting

An audience of 5,000 people doesn't give the algorithm enough data to optimize. For most campaigns, aim for audiences of 50,000-500,000. Let the algorithm's machine learning find the best prospects within a broader audience.

Mistake 4: One Ad Per Campaign

Always test 3-5 ad variations per ad set. Test different images, videos, headlines, and copy. The winning ad is rarely what you'd predict — let the data decide.

Mistake 5: Ignoring the Landing Page

Your ad is only half the equation. If you drive traffic to a slow, confusing, or irrelevant landing page, you'll waste your ad spend. The ad and landing page must deliver a consistent message and seamless experience.

    Mistake 6: Not Using Retargeting

Only 2-3% of website visitors convert on their first visit. Retargeting ads remind the other 97% of your existence and bring them back to convert. Retargeting campaigns typically deliver 3-10x better ROAS than cold campaigns.

    Mistake 7: Judging Too Quickly

Social media algorithms need time to learn and optimize. Changing ads or killing campaigns after 1-2 days doesn't give the system enough data to perform. Give campaigns at least 5-7 days and 50+ conversions before making major decisions.

    The Fix

Start with a clear objective. Target appropriately sized audiences. Test multiple creatives. Send traffic to optimized landing pages. Implement retargeting. And give your campaigns time to optimize.
