How to Measure Digital Marketing ROI (Without a Data Science Degree)

    September 2024· 6 min read·By Abbey Smith

Every business owner asks the same question: 'Is my marketing working?' Surprisingly few can answer it. The problem isn't a lack of data — it's a lack of clear frameworks for connecting marketing activity to business outcomes.

    The Simple ROI Formula

Marketing ROI = (Revenue Attributed to Marketing - Marketing Cost) ÷ Marketing Cost × 100. If you spend $5,000 on marketing and it generates $20,000 in revenue, your ROI is 300%. Simple in theory — the challenge is accurate attribution.

    Channel-by-Channel ROI Measurement

**Google Ads:** Track cost per lead and cost per acquisition directly in the platform. Connect to your CRM to track leads through to revenue.

**SEO:** Track organic traffic growth, organic leads, and organic revenue month over month. Calculate the cost of your SEO investment (agency fees, content creation, tools) against the revenue generated.

**Social media:** Track leads from social media using UTM parameters. Calculate the cost of content creation and management against leads and revenue generated. Include both organic and paid social in your calculations.

**Email marketing:** Track revenue per email sent, conversion rate per campaign, and the lifetime value of email-acquired customers against the cost of your email platform and content creation.

    The Attribution Challenge

Most customers interact with multiple marketing touchpoints before converting. A customer might find you through Google search, follow you on Instagram, receive a nurture email, and then call you after seeing a retargeting ad. Which channel gets credit?

    Practical Attribution Models

**Last-touch attribution:** Gives credit to the final interaction before conversion. Simple but incomplete.

**First-touch attribution:** Gives credit to the channel that first brought the customer to you. Good for understanding awareness channels.

**Multi-touch attribution:** Distributes credit across all touchpoints. Most accurate but more complex to implement.

For most small businesses, last-touch attribution with first-touch tracking provides a practical balance of simplicity and accuracy.

    The Most Important Metric

If you track nothing else, track cost per acquisition (CPA) by channel. This tells you how much it costs to acquire a customer from each marketing channel, allowing you to invest more in efficient channels and less in expensive ones.
